From The Arizona Republic:

June Beverly Bonesteel passed away on March 21, 2017. Born in Milwaukee in 1938, she lived in Arizona since 1954. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from ASU in 1959. After graduation and because of her love of animals, June operated a dog grooming business. With the encouragement of her parents, she bought a horse named Foolish. As she often said, Foolish understood more about humans than she knew about horses so June set out to find where Foolish received his training. She located Roland and Betty Burritt who not only trained horses but also operated Tranquilla Flying School at the Deer Valley Airport. June took her first flight on July 7th, 1963 with Betty Burritt, CFI, and was forever captivated by her love of flight. In 1967 June became a Certificated Flight Instructor and in 1970 she opened her own flight school, June’s Aviation, which was an accredited FAA Part 141 flight school at Deer Valley Airport. June was a very detailed oriented, safety conscious, focused and competent flight instructor. She was able to pass her knowledge, skills and love of flying on to her many students while continuing to advance her own education by achieving the Airline Transport Certificate. June then acquired her Airframe and Powerplant certificate and was one of the first women in Arizona to earn the Authorized Inspector designation. In 1975 she added the Helicopter and very accomplished Instrument Helicopter ratings to her Flight Instructor Certificate as well. In 1983, June became an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner and certified pilots for their various certificates. In 1978, June received the FAA Arizona Flight Instructor of the Year award. She received this honor again in 1987 and additionally was presented the FAA Southwest Region award and continued on to win the prestigious FAA 1987 National Flight Instructor of the Year. FAA Administrator T. Allan McArtor presented this award to her in Washington D.C. June later created and operated the Bonesteel Aviation Academy, another FAA Part 141 school at Scottsdale Airport and was authorized by the FAA to conduct CFI Refresher courses. It was during this time that June authored and published a complete set of comprehensive training manuals for students and flight instructors which are currently sold internationally and utilized by many prominent colleges and universities. During her long and distinguished career, she logged more than 13,000 hours of flight time which was mainly instructional or flight check hours. June is preceded in death by her beloved parents, James Bonesteel and Adeline (Hass) Bonesteel. She has been honored by the Experimental Aircraft Association in Oshkosh, WI and inducted into the Forest of Friendship in Atchinson, KS. Per June’s request, a private graveside ceremony will be held. A Celebration of Life is planned and will be announced soon. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in June’s name to the Phoenix99s.org scholarship funds promoting Women in Aviation.
