Here are the minutes of the most recent meeting of the Arizona Flight Training Workgroup, held April 13, 2011, at the Scottsdale Flight Standards District Office:

1.       The forecasted addition of Approach Control in Prescott was discussed, work toward that goal is behind schedule

2.       The possibility of KIWA becoming a Class C airspace area was mentioned – this is a
distant future possibility – if an airspace classification change occurs, it
would be due to the number of operations

3.       Proposed Special Flight Rules Area changes in Grand Canyon

General intent is the restoration of natural quiet

4.       Caution expressed concerning the North Las Vegas, NV Northtown 2 Departure

Las Vegas area has a high volume of air traffic

There have been over 80 pilot deviations concerning this procedure in the last 24 months – most are due to inadequate pre-flight planning and briefing

The departure procedure must be followed precisely

5.       Luke SATR operations were discussed

The SATR will be closed after sunset even if Luke AFB isconducting night flights

6.       Announcement for FAASTeam Safety Stand Down meetings on April 23, 2011

Same content will be delivered at several locations

7.       Next AFTW meeting scheduled for June 8, 2011 at 0930 at the Scottsdale FSDO

8.       During practice instrument approaches at non-towered airports, early radiocommunication was encouraged

9.       Allegiant Air has 28 flights a day operating at KIWA, in March there were 7 Allegiant aircraft based at KIWA

10.   Phoenix area aerobatic boxes discussed – they are not to be used by the general public for aerobatic operations

11.   Any near mid-air collision reporting that is done must be initiated by pilots, not ATC

12.   Caution urged during VFR practice north of KDVT on the airways

13.   Although the NDB at Falcon (FFZ) is already turned off, it will be officially decommissioned on May
5, 2011

14.   GA awards were mentioned and the ability to nominate flight instructors, maintenance technicians, and avionics technicians

Nominations are due by the end of September.
